Wow honestly speechless well let me just start by saying that THIS is really awesome! It reminds me of the earlier years of Newgrounds when VGM and 8Bit were really at an all time high. The piano part at 0:50 is nice and less reverb than the way I did it but it's satisfying. 1:43 the partial interlude definitely gives off that same melody progression. This is really cool! I am flattered to hear from your DM's that I've inspired you to make music. Keep doing what you're doing and one day you will achieve your dreams and goals. Who knows maybe in the future we can collaborate with each other. I'm always looking to connect with artists.

ty ty ty!!

Okay I'm really liking this one. I would say my favorite part of this is the start to finish. I never collaborated with an artist before but I'd love to work on a remix of this with you. We can do a drum & bass type of thing or if you want we can even get down to electronic dance or dubstep. I feel this vibe way too much.

ChronoNomad responds:

Ayyy, Teck! Always a pleasure to see a review from you. :D

Wait, did you say that your favorite part is, like...basically...the entire song? Haha, that's entirely too awesome of you. And very much appreciated. It's definitely been a hot minute since my last collab, but I'm totally down for a Teckmo-X remix on this puppy. I think it would sound sweet in any one of those genres, though I've admittedly never really done much in the way of Dubstep myself.

What more can I say? Vibe on, my friend. VIBE. ON.

I like this beat so much! Really cool Larry!

Thanks Teckmo-X! I enjoyed your pixel day contribution as well! Very long and epic :D

The fun part about making music is the experimental part of discovering new sounds to work with. I think this is good if you're into horror or thrillers, it's something that captures some grotesque scenery. So here's what I think of this piece:

Let's start with the pros. Well I like the beginning of this. I see what you did there. You tried to capture the heartbeat type of beat lol. This is nice and it gives some secondary character-ism to the song. It definitely has a level of creepy in the background and wouldn't mind listening to this on a video game. It's perfect for a horror game in many ways. The style, the beat, the chill that runs down your spine. Qualities music needs to bring to peoples attention.

I find it awesome that you tried to synchronize the piano roles to each section of the song. Pianos are just a great way to add some atmosphere for just about anything and this one worked out for you.

With every good there's a bad:

So everything seems just fine but as I listen it feels dry. The song has some good atmosphere but what makes horror grab you by the heart is the effects. Reverb, Delays, Sustains, and LFO effects can really help out with bringing the atmosphere to life. I can give you an example of this in one of my songs "City Ruins". It amounts with lots of reverb and sustain which when pairing with keyboards, pads, and atmospheres it can easily bring out that tense but bassy reflections of sub bass that sends chills down your spine.

Other than that I'd say mixing and mastering too but that's problematic for everyone even myself. I definitely think this has more potential and if you were to take my advice and try to add some reverb and sustain it will help you clear a path for a smoother transition in atmosphere. With the right tweaks this can be movie material sound. I enjoyed it.

Codefreq responds:

First off, thank you for taking the time to provide me with such a detailed critique. I know it isn't necessarily easy to go out of your way to write such a lengthy review.

Second, while I appreciate the suggestions to use effects, the dryness was deliberate. This was done primarily for two reasons:

1: I tried invoke the feeling of a scary part of a nightmare where a so-called "jump scare" wakes me up. Having different effects may invoke a "classic horror" style, but personally my nightmares don't work that way.

2: No piece of music has ever scared me more than the piece titled, "Omen Of The Bloody Moon", from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is also rather dry. I tried to mimic the feeling I got from that piece (not to be confused with the technical aspects, I'm talking strictly about the vibe here) when I made this song. I also tried to get the feeling of uneasiness to come across with the complementing artwork.

The bigger point is not just creating scary music, but creating music that drastically changes the initial vibe of the artwork that the music goes with.

That said, I'll keep your suggestions in mind.

Thank you for your positive feedback as well. I don't think it should go unnoticed. :)

By the way, I gave your piece a listen. It's certainly a different approach than mine, but there's more than one way to go about making something scary.

Review for Review I honestly think this is great. I get a lot of Dexter's Laboratory vibes coming from the chorus. Specifically the start has a nice flow but I do feel like that vocal entrance was a bit held too long. maybe a little less reverb on that one. When it gets to 1:08 that's when the Dex Lab feels hit strong. I would have liked to hear some nice wobbles there though. Maybe a mega saw drop could have been nice. The interlude comes in at 1:37 and that really calms the chain flow and gives your listeners some time to breath. Starting at 2:04 to 2:32 seemed shorter than the beginning verse which just seems better that way and then the drop hits and I liked it but it also felt dry on variety.

In conclusion to this review I like it and it's an interesting combo of dark but chill melodies that really shows the uniqueness of the song. My only complaints are variety like drops and SFX that could have given it a little more umph. Keep it up though! I lkike your style!

NoStereo responds:

Wow dexter's lab, that's an old one. Thanks for the great review!

Honestly I haven't had time to listen to a lot of other users music here and you follow me. This is fresh and new and it sounds good. There are some flaws in it like noise and overlaps but it's something in the making so no real judgmental thoughts yet. I've listened to it 7 times and I'm getting the hang of it. I haven't collaborated in a while so maybe I can share some verses for your music? I can create simple melodies and you can use them as you'd like? Don't need to give me credit for it but I'd love to help you out if it's okay? Keep working on it and let me know if you'd like to here some samples I have for you :)

Vortonox responds:

Didn't expect you to comment!
Thank u! :D

So I've listened to this like 6 times already and I love the vibe. It has a dark melody to it but the structure is what kept me busy. I like the lead you added in the beginning towards that uprising at 1:00. I like the flow of the background bass and piano. Something I admire about chillstep/trap music genres is oriental material and sounds that could be used to spice up the track and you always had that sort of ability to incorporate those sounds into your music. That koto that I keep hearing throughout the song was just eargasmic lol. Everything from the structure of the song to the melody and variety of sounds used made this track almost irresistible. The one thing I would have done is raise the bass a little bit to add a boost to the background of the song. Other than that I love it! Keep going Jimmy!!!

Jimmypig responds:

Thank you for the amazing review! This track never made it onto the album, but since you like this I really hope you love the album when it's done! (about 7 tracks done so far)

So I'm gonna start off this review with some of the good and end it with the bad. Starting off I actually like most of what you used for the song. I'm guessing that you used FL Studio and somewhat on the range of plugins from Harmor to Ogun or at least something simpler? So that was a good start until 0:32. I like the channels you added and the miscellaneous sounds that give it that spooky feeling. From 0:32-0:48 was decent.

Here's the bad: It didn't have much of an umph to it through out the song. It had me started until 0:32 and then it just fell apart for me. I was hoping to get something more of a bass drop or a more consistent drum pattern instead of the 1/2 beat that you made. It sounded generic and not much variety with your drum options. The song didn't have much variety as well as it was just repeating the same thing over and over again starting 1:04. It needs more variety and some basslines to go along with it. Another thing I wasn't feeling was the repeat of the bells that as nice as they sound was too ongoing to begin with.

Advice: I would work on the song by planning ahead and splitting different sections to utilize a more appealing melodic structure rather than a repetitive one. Melody and structure are important in a song and this is just not cutting out. I would work on bass drops as well as this isn't house music, it's rather more a mix of industrial/ Dubstep/ Trap mixup. As for the drums make a variety of samples using your channels. The FPC is great for adding your own sounds from the side panel which could have a much better impact to your songs. Only use single channel drums when you are trying to develop build ups with effects like filters and phasers, etc. Last thing I would suggest you try is to come up with a nice lead for your music. Let me suggest working on this song again if you have the file and try to make it into a dubstep song because I can see you being able to pull of the genre with some practice.

Some songs that could help you give ideas are;

1. Matter of Time by PhaseOne
2. Monsters and Sprites by Skrillex

262hz responds:

I've actually listened to Haunted and have taken a bit of inspiration! Thanks for the thoughtful Insight.

I'm so happy I get to review this piece because let me tell you it's about. TO. GO. DOWN!!!

So let me start with 0:00-0:30. This part I was skeptical because I kept believing it was just gonna keep on stretching itself to the point of a build up somewhere in the 1:00 section but instead it just came out nice. It had a small section of interlude filtering from 0:15 and then from there on to 0:30 it had that nice little add on lead 8 bit sound which nice job on just keeping it simple without any reverb because that's what 8 bit is supposed to sound.

From 0:30 to 0:44 I like the beat you added it's simple and works well with it throughout the song so the drumming is in check and no complaints there. At 0:44-0:58 that uprising towards the climax is interesting in a way where for me it seemed like it could have had a little added variety at around 0:56-0:58, something like Paradigm by Case & Point. To me it's still good regardless. Now coming in to both chorus I could hear a lot of structure and if I'm right some sampling which came out very nice and that's something that brought me to continue listening to this piece. I think to be fair my favorite part was the interlude in the mid section of this piece that hits around 1:57 to 2:11. I love the calmness towards the solo bits. Another thing I like about this piece is the little sounds and effects you added like bells, chimes, and swirls. It's cute, it's not in the slightest bit generic, there's a lot of structure and work put into it, and literally one of the best mixed and mastered pieces I've heard here on Newgrounds. All of it reminds me of Snails House way of making music. Great job! Amazing work! Keep it up!

Crazy-Unicorn responds:

You're a very kind person dude <3 It feels just so good to hear such a nice review :')
I feel like I have a lot to learn still ;) So I'll keep on improving <3
Thanks again!

What I like about this is that you got the bass part pretty close to what a D&B song would sound like. This isn't bad and I did like it but it could use some more work into it. Starting off I felt like from the start towards 0:22 was dry and could have used some hats and light filtered kicks which would have liven it up. When it reached that point I did think it could have used a little more drums and baseline could have been a bit better for sure. Throughout that I think the piano could have had more lead, the bass sure does need a little work, and drums sound generic so a bit more structure would help. The last thing is mixing and mastering. I have trouble with this too and it takes me time before I render any of my work for good as I work on mixing and mastering. Work on that too. It's not bad but it could be better for sure. Keep practicing!

SierraRising responds:

Woah, lots of useful stuff in here, thank you very much! I definitely agree with all of your points, and will try to implement them.
